First Ever Oil Painting

I’ve used watercolor, colored pencil, soft pastel, oil pastel, charcoal, graphite, and ink, but never oils. I bought five R&H Pigment Sticks in blue, red, yellow, black, and white, not knowing what to expect. I knew they act like oil paint but in a stick form so can be used a little more like a pastel. However, all the examples I found of oil sticks were bold and abstract while I knew I wanted something more realistic. I gave it a try with the first coat going on heavy and the rest with brushes and clay shapers. It turned out okay for a first try, although the trees were less than stellar.

  1. For a 1st attempt looks great. Having followed your art I can understand your inclination to realism, but though the trees lean more towards impressionist, they complement the main star, the barn.

    1. Thanks for your thoughts. I’m on the fence about oil painting, though, after finding a few gnats stuck in the sky the next day. I don’t know how artists have the patience to wait for the paint to dry!

      1. lol! I typically use water color and during the summer the stupid gnats will gather on the rim of my brush wash water. I’m not sure that I was ever able to drown the stupid things. Fortunately living where it gets cold, sometimes real cold we don’t have to put up with them for very long.
