Favorite Summer Art Supplies

- Arches hot pressed watercolor paper in a block: I have two favorite paper brands, Legion for dry media and Arches for wet media. I also love Legion Aqua but haven’t felt like stretching it.
- De Atramentis Document Ink: It’s lightfast, permanent, and the colors are mixable. Other than white and yellow, I don’t have troubles in fountain pens and use it for all ink drawings.
- Majohn Q2 fountain pen with a bent/fude nib: It’s a funny looking pen, but I like the wide barrel, the eye dropper fill, the huge capacity, and the awesome bent nib. I can draw the thinnest of lines with it upside down, and when right-side down, the fude fills in space like a thick magic marker.
- Kuretake Sumi Brush fountain pen: The only complaint I have is the converter doesn’t hold much ink. Otherwise, this is a perfect fountain brush pen.
- Tombow Dust Catch eraser: A newer purchase, this is one of the best erasers I’ve used. It doesn’t lift off the ink, is gentle on paper, and doesn’t leave hardly any “dust.” Love it.
- Tutto3 mechanical pencil (three sizes of leads): This is probably a hit-and-miss purchase for many. It’s a bit touchy, but it’s become my mechanical pencil of choice for regular or thin lines.
- Musgrave NJK double blade sharpener: A fantastic pencil sharpener with two blades. If only it had two sizes instead of one it would be perfect.
- Sakura Gelly Roll pens: I don’t love these, but, honestly, I need something for highlights after I’ve accidentally lost them and these pens do the trick.
- Caran d’Ache Luminance colored pencils: No surprise that I love the most expensive colored pencils that you can buy. But, they’re awesome and they last forever.
- Derwent Drawing Pencils: Soft leads, subdued colors, lovely.
- Kuretake water brushes: I go through water brushes quickly, so I’m always trying something new. These stand out for their surprisingly nice feel and no leaks.
- 2” brush: It’s the only one I have but I’ve used it on all my backgrounds lately.
Summer isn’t summer if I don’t get into a routine of using the same art supplies over and over. This summer has been paper-based with ink and colored pencils. There are times I think I could give away all my other supplies—the sets of gouache and acrylics, the numerous watercolor pallets and markers—but as soon as I think that I’ll take them out and start using them.
