Oil Pastel on Wood

8″x10″, oil pastel on prepped wooden panel

A very bright sky and foreground and some interesting, semi-circular barns. I prepped the wooden panel with two coats of Gac 100 by Golden as a sealant and then two coats of gesso, leaving brushmarks. The buildings created the composition, so I felt like all I had to do was capture it.

Ink on Canvas Board

I think sometimes when I’m in a slump, I do something unusual, like this large canvas board drawing/painting. I don’t really care for it, but it was a fun process–lots of layers and the fountain pen kind of bumped along the canvas and did its own thing.

11″ x 15″, Jetstream Uni ballpoint pen (red, blue, black) on Khadi watercolor paper

This one’s different–the weird lighting makes it even more so (the top right isn’t actually yellow). I just wanted to draw some flowers, but I didn’t have any plan at all. Here’s where it sits, and now I wonder what to do. Is it done? It doesn’t really have a focus, the composition is so-so, I don’t know where I was heading with the background. Time for a break.

Song Sparrow

11″ x 15″, Dr. Bombay India Ink on Khadi watercolor paper

I didn’t plan this one out too much, just did a simplified pencil drawing of the Song Sparrow perching on the cup plant based on a photo I had taken. I let it sit for a day as it looks on the right, but in the morning light, I realized I had to do something drastic to get some contrast into it, so I used India ink straight and brushed it around the leaves. It’s now very dramatic and, I think, far more interesting.
