Whooping Cranes in Ink

And on paper and Ampersand Claybord.

The above is my favorite, but I’m also fond of the Claybord version, which is more stylized.

(If you look closely at the above piece, you may be able to spot a Blue Crab in the water.)

My goal was to depict a family of Whooping Cranes. I used three different reference photos I had taken, all of the same bird. Another goal was to use what’s called a mother color to create a harmonious color scheme. Instead of relying on only one color to add to everything else I used, I created a triad “mother color” group with three primaries, and I added a small amount to everything. The paper version was all around more successful with that experiment, as the paper absorbed some of the intensity.

Water Soluble Graphite Barn

16″x12″ water soluble graphite on Khadi paper

I love using water soluble anything, so this was a relaxing way to spend a rainy morning. I could only find two of my pencils, however, so I’ve misplaced three of them. I used the tin of Artgraph Viarco graphite as well the carbon “tile” from the same company which helped with large areas of darker value.

A Busy Drawing in Ink

Another Inktober drawing, this one using mostly India ink on Khadi paper. I bought a bottle of Higgins ink in brown, and it was a nice change from black and white. I ended up using Bombay inks to add some color.

Inktober Morning Glories Project

18″x24″, ink on gessoed canvas board

October rolled around, and I set down my oil pastels and picked up my Indigraph fountain pen. But first, I put on two more coats of gesso on this canvas board and a generous amount of ink that created a very active background. I decided to use reds and yellows with a hint of blue to create an analogous color scheme of orange, plum, and red. I’m a little intimidated by the size, but so far, this has been super fun.
