Gray Colored Sparrow
I had to look this one up using the Merlin app and my photo. There are so many types of sparrows. This is my fourth in what is becoming a series.

All of these sketches are in my 8”x11.75” Stillman and Birn Zeta sketchbook. I’m using fountain pens and ink on each. Someday, I’ll write a post about using fountain pens, a great eco choice for artists.

I haven’t felt much like sketching or painting until the past few days. We discovered a new park, and I snapped a photo of what I think is an American Tree Sparrow. My photo was a little blurry, but I had enough detail to finish this drawing.
This is in colored pencil—Pablo and Derwent drawing—on a background of Neocolor II. I used Pastelmat in a yellow orange color.

This one started as a winter scene but I honestly got confused with adding snow, so I swapped back to warm weather. I used two reference photos from Paint My Photo, and the branches and leaves were from observing the crab apple in our yard–with plenty of artistic license.

I used a piece of Strathmore 500 Illustration Board for this, and I absolutely loved it. It’s sturdy, takes water, and has a very minimal texture. Expensive? Yes, but it’s perfect for this medium.
